Safeguard Your Mail: Preventing Check Fraud
The Reality of Mail Theft
Mail theft remains a significant concern, despite the trust Americans place in the USPS to handle billions of letters each year. Thieves continue to target the mail, and Postal Inspectors are actively working to combat these crimes. In February 2023, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network issued a warning about a nationwide increase in mail theft related to check fraud.
Fraudsters often rob on-duty mail carriers or steal keys to collection boxes, allowing them to access and steal mail. Once they have the checks, they alter them with fraudulent names or accounts in a process known as check washing.
